The juvenile girls’ section of the club was established in 2022, marking a historic milestone with the registration juvenile teams. Prior to this the first four female players: Saoirse Grant, Libby McDonagh, Michaela Caldwell, and Lucie Styles were playing on the boys teams. Saoirse Grant was the first girl to play with the club and has been a standout role model, having played on all-boys teams before becoming a key player on West United’s inaugural Women’s Team. Before the formation of dedicated girls’ teams, all four girls gained valuable experience playing alongside the boys. In 2023, the club’s U12 girls’ team made history by winning both the league and the cup—the first silverware ever captured by a girls’ team at the club. The adult women’s section was established in 2024 and entered the Galway District League. In 2025, the ladies’ team competed in the league for the first time, further cementing the club’s commitment to the development of female football. West United is going from strength to strength, with increasing participation across all age groups and a strong sense of community spirit. Many of the players have family members involved with the club—as coaches, volunteers, and supporters—creating a proud and supportive environment that continues to drive the club forward. Two players have also gone on to represent Galway at inter-county level: Lucie Styles (U12) and Jane Carroll (U13), a testament to the talent and potential being nurtured at the club.
