WELCOME TO THE WEST

West United A.F.C. was founded in 1945 by Colie McDonagh, Michael Byrne, Matt Glynn, Tim Keane, and Charlie Devlin. The club adopted green and white hoops as its official colours. Initially, the team played its home games at West Park in Renmore.

In the early years, the club enjoyed notable success, capturing the Murphy Cup twice within its first five seasons. However, in 1951, the club was disbanded before being re-established in 1958, with Gerry Forkan taking on the role of President. The 1970s marked a golden era for West United as the club rose to prominence in both junior and underage football. In 1971, the club claimed its first Galway Premier Division title and also secured the Joe Ryan Cup, firmly establishing itself as a local powerhouse.

A year later, West United lifted its first Connacht Youth Cup, and in 1975, added a Connacht Junior Cup to its growing list of accolades. A historic double followed in 1982, with the club winning both the Connacht Youth and Junior Cups in the same season. Another major triumph came in 1987 when West United captured its second Premier League title. The success continued into the 1990s, with 1993 bringing a memorable double—another Premier League title alongside victory in the Joe Ryan Cup.

But it was the following year, 1994, that delivered perhaps the club’s most significant achievement: a stunning Connacht Senior Cup campaign. West United overcame strong opponents including Ballina Town, CB Trotters, and Sligo Rovers, ultimately defeating Straide/Foxford in the final to lift the prestigious trophy. In more recent years, the club has continued to build on its rich tradition. A standout season in 2009 saw West United win the Premier League, the Michael Byrne Cup, and the Bernard Concar Cup. The Joe Ryan Cup was added again in 2012, followed by a 1st Division title in 2016 and Reserve League success in 2017.

The 2018 season was especially productive, with wins in the Joe Ryan Cup, both Over 35 and Over 35B leagues, and another Reserve League title. The Reserve team maintained its winning ways with further titles in 2019 and 2022. The Over 35 squad has been a model of consistency, capturing league titles in 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022. West United has continued to nurture talent, with the U13s winning the Division 4 Cup in 2022 and the U14s achieving both the Division 4 League and the Division 3/4 Cup in 2023. That same year, the Girls U12 team secured an impressive league and cup double. The club’s success continued into 2024, with titles in the U15 Division 3 League, the U11 Jaguar Cup, the Over 42 League, and the City 35 League. In 2025, West United reached new heights with a clean sweep of the U21 Championship League and Cup, along with league titles in U17 Division 2, U16 Division 2 League and Cup, U13 Division 7 and the U11 Hawk Cup.

Through decades of dedication, development, and determination, West United A.F.C. has built a legacy of excellence that continues to thrive at every level of the game.
